Videre click to LISTEN
It's self-evident, we would guess, that anyone interested in taking the long view of the English language would be well-advised to know Latin. But we would also guess that even the most scholarly sorts would be well served by clairvoyance if they were trying to list all the English words that include the Latin videre in their ancestry.

Videre means "to see" in Latin; it's easy to spot a few of the videre descendants that we've already mentioned today: namely, the words evident, view, advised, and clairvoyance. But before you divide the world into those who "see" etymological histories at a glance and those who don't, we'll provide you with this tip: videre descendants include not only evident, view, advise, and clairvoyance (the Latin ancestors of those words-with-a-view translate roughly (and respectively) as "thoroughly-seeing," the "act of seeing," "toward-seeing," and "seeing clearly"), but also the terms video, visible, vista, and visa. It's easy to discern the associations between videre and video, visible, and vista, but visa is a bit of a stumper. Its link isn't a reflection of the fact that possession of a visa permits a person to "see" a particular country; rather, the presence of a visa is evidence a traveler's passport has been vetted by the proper authorities.
