Dog terms click to LISTEN
As the dog days of summer come around, we're spending a bit of the traditionally hot and sultry weather hunting down a few of the various dog terms in our lexicon.

The phrase dog's letter is a fancy way to name the letter R. Dog's letter is a translation of the Latin littera canina; the terminology comes from the fancied resemblance of the trilled R to the growl of a dog.

We'll move from growling dogs to growlers of beer for the story of hair of the dog. To have a hair of the dog that bit you is "to cure yourself by having more of the thing that laid you low;" the metaphor is commonly applied to using alcohol to recover from a hangover. That figurative sense has a literal origin; at one time, folks bitten by a dog would attempt to hasten the healing by placing a hair of the dog that had bitten them into their wound. The proverb first appeared in print in the 16th century, but the notion of curing like with like has been around for a dog's age (that is, "a very long time") – it dates back at least to Hippocrates.
